Athletes feet are exposed to high levels of loading and foot intrinsic muscle strengthening can play a role in reducing the risk of injury, improving injury management and optimising performance. Foot injuries and other lower limb injuries have been related to weak foot intrinsic muscles.
Foot muscle strengthening has been an important injury prevention strategy at The Australian Ballet; along with education and load management, injuries such as stress fracture have declined significantly.
The latest research on foot intrinsic muscle function will be presented and how this can translate into performance optimization. An evidence-based approach to foot intrinsic muscle strengthening and advice on methods that can facilitate optimal foot function will be described.
