Summary

How many of our mothers have ever told us to, “sit up straight” and to “stand up tall”?

How many people in their workstations have been told, “You need to improve your ergonomics and adopt a neutral posture, to reduce the risk of damage to your spine”?

How many workers in factories have been given the lecture “Bend with the knees, not the back or else you’ll develop low back pain and injure your spine and discs”?

Throughout our lives, we are bombarded with images, posters and videos telling us to sit and stand up straight, not slouch in order to prevent pain and injuries. Besides, in many cultures and societies, persons with “proper posture” are perceived as being more respectable, attractive, and of having even greater moral values (Gilman 2018).

After all chimpanzees and gorillas slouch and are unable to stand up tall, but as human beings we are certainly more “advanced and dignified” than primates. Who knows if gorillas suffer from neck and back pain due to their constant slouched posture and poor lifting mechanics?

Despite questionable evidence, many health care professionals such as physical therapists continue to strongly support the belief that an upright or a slightly lordotic posture is ideal for sitting, standing, lifting and for maintaining optimal spinal health (Korakakis et al 2019).

This online course for physiotherapists and all rehabilitation professionals questions posture correction and presents the most up-to-date evidence about posture and what we should be telling our patients.

★★★★★

Dynamic presentation!

★★★★★

The first few minutes were uncomfortable, but in the end it was very interesting. It puts our learning about perfect posture into perspective.

★★★★★

Very interesting! And innovative advice!

★★★★★

Very relevant perspective and approach that goes against the grain of what is most often heard about posture.

★★★★★

A great webinar to remind us of the importance of offering suggestions for simple movements to do in sustained positions. The suggestions are great, but I would have liked to know why he likes to give the archer for cervical pain.

★★★★★

Concise and relevant.

★★★★★

What an interesting and dynamic update.

★★★★★

I’m not sure I agree with not trying to improve posture, but the idea of avoiding staying in the same position for a long time and moving regularly appeals to me more.

★★★★★

Very interesting, even revolutionary, because the postural hygiene I have been teaching for a long time may not be the right thing to do. Thank you.

★★★★★

Super simple, super intuitive!

★★★★★

Interesting to learn the basics. Good reminder

★★★★★

Little information provided. Interesting principle

★★★★★

Looks like an infomercial. Not very scientific. Yes you have to move, but make brrr. 🙂

★★★★★

Finally, to be told such simple obvious things. If only this course were translated into every language to reach as many therapists as possible!!!

★★★★★

Interesting, but it would have been nice to go deeper and put more evidence on the subject.

★★★★★

Although I agree with all the key points explained in this webinar, I feel like it’s missing a lot of nuance and the presentation is too ”sensationalist”. I think the message is relevant, but not presented in a decent way.

★★★★★

Controversial… :/

★★★★★

The subject is defensible, but I found the speaker rather demagogic, I felt almost like I was facing a guru.

★★★★★

My advice definitely needs to be revised 🙂 Very interesting course and as usual Mr Jam is entertaining.

★★★★★

This dynamic course allows us to reflect on and question our current beliefs about rehabilitation postures.

★★★★★

My opinion: There’s room for discussion on several points! It’s not posture that needs correcting, but muscular and structural imbalances. The stabilizing muscles of the trunk are essential to allow controlled mobility of the spine within the available amplitudes! The lecturer offers a detailed model of how to manage the problem.

★★★★★

It’s a great course that makes you think about your own practice. Several points to put into practice

★★★★★

A different point of view. We already tell our clients to move and not stay in the same posture for long.

★★★★★

Interesting but a lot of modules for one key point

★★★★★

Interesting! To be complemented by other training/research, but as an occupational therapist who adjusts workstations, I’m curious to learn more.

Hi, I’d like to say that unfortunately I was really disappointed with this course. The narration is really childish and for a target audience of healthcare workers it was very simplistic. Many of the videos were very repetitive. I don’t know if the aim of this course is to polarize the debate on postural correction, but I didn’t feel that the evidence presented was used adequately. We listened to it as a group at work and none of the speakers (physio, ergo, kin) were satisfied with the type and content of the presentation. A first disappointment for one of your courses, since I’ve always taken relevant courses with you.
