This course will provide clinicians with a detailed overview of the latest scientific evidence, including the most recent randomized controlled trials on diastasis recti abdominis during and after pregnancy, with a focus on the biomechanics and associated structural components of the abdominal trunk and the function of the white line (linea alba, LA).
A detailed review of the literature regarding the relationship between breathing mechanics, abdominals and pelvic floor muscles in the context of the abdominal manometric system will be presented, considering the implications of pregnancy. What constitutes a functional impairment of the structure and/or function of the LA and associated abdominal wall during pregnancy will be discussed from the perspective of developing clinical competence related to a conservative rehabilitation approach.
For the first year post-patrum, a review of the literature on the physiological recovery of the various body systems, as well as structural and functional changes in the tissues of the abdominal trunk and associated biological systems will be presented. All relevant perinatal factors will be considered. From this context, the identification of functional impairments of the structure or function of the linea alba through an integral assessment method will be established and presented
- Understand the physical, physiological and hormonal changes in the muscle and connective tissues of the abdominal trunk during pregnancy and in the first year post-partum.
- To identify the epidemiology of diastasis recti abdominis during pregnancy and after childbirth, as well as its associated functional consequences.
- Develop a comprehensive assessment method for the abdominal wall and the linea alba (thoraco-pelvic scan, external assessment of the pelvic floor, digital palpation, tests for abdominal function, etc.)
- Understand the state of the current scientific evidence (evidence- and practice-based) literature base related to conservative care approaches for diastasis recti abdominis.
