Summary

Aging is an important stage in the life cycle, a wish that many people do not understand. Growing old can be unpleasant and bring new problems, but there are ways to age well. This is what Guy Hajj Boutros, lecturer in the Department of Physical Activity Sciences at the Université du Québec à Montréal, clinical research coordinator at the McGill University Health Centre and doctoral student in experimental medicine at McGill University, will present to us in this webinar on the epidemiology of aging, the factors that influence physiological changes and the prevention strategies to use with your patients.

Objectives

  1. Understand the epidemiology of aging
  2. Recognize the factors that influence physiological changes
  3. Know the prevention strategies to use with your patients

As a kinesiologist, this course was just a reminder of concepts I already knew. Interesting to see different studies to support the importance of preventing muscle mass loss, but very few concrete strategies or recommendations (FITT) to guide us.

I was hoping to get some info on the physiological effects of various types of training or exercise, the physiological changes in connective tissue, muscles, tendons; a guide to help target the right type of training for this population.

Talked about relevant studies, but I feel the presenter could have gone into a bit more detail about the metabolic changes of exercise given that this instructor’s target audience is the health professions who already have a grounding in the subject.

★★★★★

I was expecting more concrete prevention strategies to use with our patients.

★★★★★

Thanks for the course! It would be interesting to have further courses on physical activity and the elderly, including fitness assessments. Personally, I work in a CHSLD, which means I work with a population with very limited functional abilities.
