Shoulders are complex and what makes them more complex is the mixed messages coming from many practitioners on how shoulders should be assessed and managed. Should we use ‘special’ orthopedic tests as part of our approach? Well, you could however the specificity and sensitivity of most tests is so variable, and the focus of these tests is purely on structure vs function. Should we consider posture and dyskinesia?
You could, however, when reviewing current literature there is low evidence that these correlate to symptoms leaving practitioners with more inference versus true meaningful information. So how can we simplify our approach?
Using both qualitative and quantitative information in a systematic approach there are ways of keeping things simple and ensuring an appropriate understanding of functional deficits and abilities. This then allows a more tailored approach towards management. So, if you want to add more strings to your bow towards sporting shoulder injuries, then check out this episode!
