Summary

In this webinar, Ms. Cusick details the key biomechanical and sensorimotor aspects of early acquisition of postural control – the essential foundation for developing competent limb use and motor skills.

In this course, Ms. Cusick discusses key elements from the clinical literature, and identifies typical and essential changes in postural control in the supine and prone position. In this course, you will also see three case study videos of clients before and after therapeutic interventions that address their postural control deficits. After a summary of the course and the principles to remember, Ms. Beverly Cusick presents a question-and-answer session based on questions already asked by students at previous conferences. A final quiz will be offered to test your learning. In conclusion, Ms. Cusick cites the leading clinicians who have significantly influenced her work and details their contributions to the scientific foundations of the Golden Rule.

Objectives

  • Define postural control
  • Know how to identify the significant signs of the “search for verticality” in daily life
  • Describe the influence of will to verticality on stability in early development in the ventral position.
  • Define Bly’s stability point and mobility point
  • Identify the three sensory systems involved in postural control and the acquisition of motor skills.
  • Know the correct sequence of planes in which postural control develops prior to walking, according to Bly.
  • To know the first and second components of counter-gravity movement that occur during normal child development.
  • Be familiar with the proposed clinical “golden rule” for pediatric orthopedic and neuromotor management.
  • To be able to suggest interventions that implement the golden rule for newborns with deficits in postural control following preterm birth.

The course was a bit short and not very detailed. It was divided into two parts. Next, I imagine we’ll discuss the 6-month to 12-month period?

Acquisition du contrôle postural chez le bébé

I found Ms. Cusick’s webinar interesting, and even more so because it was translated into French. However, the presentation focused heavily on TheraTog straps. I was hoping for a bit more content on postural control. Still, I did take away some interesting insights regarding stability points versus mobility points in a baby’s development.

Is there intermittent microphone interference? It’s slightly annoying in the background.

★★★★★

Gives very clear and precise description of postural control and it’s developpement in babies. Great cases. Just wish theratogs were not the only mode of intervention as they are very hard to get in my area of practice. It would be nice to have various strategies for intervention.

★★★★★

Very good foundation for working on motor development in young children.

★★★★★

Didn’t meet my expectations. Very niché intervention technique.

★★★★★

A course that helped me remember the basics.

★★★★★

Short but excellent and essential presentation for any therapist evaluating the motor development of the baby.

★★★★★

It’s a good base, a little too focused on the use of the theratog though.

Very good presentation! Very clinical content.

★★★★★

Very interesting course. Allowed me to reintegrate essential concepts and basic elements to consider in my practice.

★★★★★

Good course. Clear and precise. I would have liked even more clinical cases and more detailed clinical reasoning.

★★★★★

I would have liked to see more ideas for interventions using equipment other than Theratogs. For example, equipment that parents can easily obtain at home.

★★★★★

Very relevant course, but it would have been interesting to have tools other than Theratogs to help overcome deficiencies.

All in all, I really enjoyed the course. It enabled me to learn more about postural development in babies from 0 to 6 months and how to help them achieve optimal prone and supine posture. The 3 cases were very interesting and highlighted what had been demonstrated during the course. I would have liked to see other kinds of exercises and treatment ideas that didn’t involve TheraTogs, as this is not a tool I use in private pediatric practice. Thank you for this course.

I treat children with autism and I’m going to put the language and ideas that I learned on this course into practice right away. I was already using these principles, but the way it was explained so clearly helps me to organize these ideas in my brain much more easily, and it really helps to know these concepts in a way that I can use to teach the parents that I work with.

Hello, this course was not presented as demonstrating the usefulness of certain treatment materials and so I find it difficult to apply. I bought Level 2 and am going to listen to it to see what it could bring to my practice, if only in terms of clinical reasoning. Because, at least, some of the principles explained may help my reasoning.

The course opened my eyes to the acquisition of the basic postures that a baby/child must achieve before being able to acquire the subsequent posture. I hope to be able to try out what I’ve learned soon.

I liked seeing the progression of posture from 0 to 6 months. This was my main interest in the course. I liked that there were several examples and videos. 🙂 I would have liked to see concrete exercises for the baby to do, touching them to help their movement and position. – see how to teach them to move from one position to another if they’re having trouble. – see the person speaking (even if translated). It’s all about making the course more dynamic and human.

Thank you for the course. My expectations were not completely fulfilled as I find it a pity that the main means of treatment proposed is a very specific material that you have to buy from a registered trademark. I didn’t understand the relevance of some of the links quoted, especially those by Kathleen Porter. Finally, there were a few errors in the French translation and the reading could have been smoother. Thank you for the few tools this course gave me, though, and I’m looking forward to the next one…

Each health professional who is a member of a college or association must complete continuing education units (CEU) annually. Here is some information about kinesiologists, physiotherapists and physiotherapy technologists.

Kinesiologist, FKQ

All accredited members of the Fédération des Kinésiologues du Québec (FKQ) must accumulate 30 credits of recognized continuing education every two years from the year of their accreditation. These credits can be obtained from continuing education offered by the FKQ and/or other organizations recognized by the FKQ. In order to facilitate your task of analyzing the credits granted to your course, the FKQ Continuing Education Committee gives you access to an equivalency grid.

For each* of your courses at Bia education, you will receive a certificate of participation confirming the number of hours of course received.

*Excluding course not accessible to kinesiologists, this exclusion will be mentioned in the course description.

Kinesiologist-kinesitherapist, A.K.K.O.M.Q.

All members of the A.K.K.O.M.Q. must accumulate continuing education units. The association intends to ensure the safety and quality of kinesiology and kinesiology-kinesitherapy interventions, by requiring its members to maintain and improve their knowledge through the many continuing education courses offered annually, and to put their skills into practice while respecting the code of ethics. Credits can be obtained from continuing education offered by the FKQ and/or other organizations recognized by the FKQ.

For each* of your courses at Bia education, you will receive a certificate of participation confirming the number of hours of course received.

*Excluding course not accessible to kinesitherapists, this exclusion will be mentioned in the course description.

Physiotherapist and physiotherapy technologist, OPPQ

In the case of physiotherapists, each member must have a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education units (CEU) during the reference period, which is three years. Of these 45 hours, at least 30 hours must be accumulated in formal learning activities. The remaining continuing education hours can be accumulated in autonomous, formal learning activities or in a combination of both categories.

A CEU is equivalent to one hour of course, which is the actual time spent by the member to acquire or update his or her knowledge or skills. In the context of a formal activity, the member is in a learning situation when acting as a participant. Time spent on breaks, meals or any other activity without academic content should therefore be subtracted from the calculation of CEUs.

A formal learning activity is defined as an activity designed and delivered by experts in the subject matter and with a predetermined structure, content, objectives and duration. All the course offered by Bia education are therefore likely to be considered as a formal learning activity. During your course at Bia education, you will receive a certificate attesting to the number of hours of continuous education granted to the event.

Then, it is the physiotherapist’s role to define whether the suggested training theme is related to his or her practice and will allow him or her to optimize his or her professional competence.
