Summary
This training is intended for dietitian-nutritionists who wish to adjust their practice for clients who have undergone bariatric surgery.
Participants will be able to differentiate between the main types of bariatric surgery, the advantages and disadvantages of each, as well as possible complications.
In the second module of this training, participants will learn the key points of a preoperative nutritional assessment as well as the risks of nutritional deficiencies. Participants will also learn about dietary progression and nutritional recommendations in the immediate post-operative period.
Finally, in the last module, participants will be able to identify the risks of nutritional deficiencies and post-operative deficiencies and make appropriate recommendations based on the side effects present.
Objectives
- Know the eligibility criteria for bariatric surgery according to the decisional algorithm and possible contraindications.
- Recognize the major bariatric surgeries and the difference between restrictive and malabsorptive surgery.
- Understand the risks and benefits of bariatric surgery as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each surgery.
- Know how to make nutritional recommendations and be aware of the risks of pre-surgical deficiencies.
- Understand the dietary progression as well as the nutritional recommendations in the immediate postoperative period.
- Identify the risks of postoperative macro and micronutrient deficiencies and apply appropriate recommendations.
- Know the recommended supplementation for different types of postoperative surgery.
- Know the different side effects and how to apply adequate nutritional recommendations when necessary.
