Summary
Providing “the right treatment, to the right patient, at the right time” is a key element of high-value care in musculoskeletal rehabilitation. Understanding and predicting the outcome of people with musculoskeletal disorders is essential to achieving this goal. The current clinical decision-making process, based primarily on diagnosis, has limitations in distinguishing between those with favorable and unfavorable trajectories. Thanks to its longitudinal and biopsychosocial understanding of the patient, prognostic information makes it possible to predict the probability of future outcomes (prognostic) or to suggest an intervention based on the patient’s characteristics (prescriptive). This type of information represents a promising avenue for rehabilitation professionals to personalize approaches and, ultimately, improve clinical outcomes for patients.
Objectives
- Understand the distinction between diagnosis and prognosis
- Recognize and use prognostic factors to better adapt interventions
- Become familiar with prognostic tools to support personalized care
