Summary

Cancer currently affects over 50% of the general population. Despite the many medical advances of recent years, the surgeries and adjuvant treatments often required to treat different types of cancer are not without consequences. Lymphoedema is one of the major consequences, and one that remains largely unknown to the general public.

This online course, based entirely on the latest evidence, will give you a better understanding of lymphedema and the importance of detecting and treating it early.

First, the anatomy and physiology of the lymphatic system will be covered, to better understand its importance in the proper functioning of our circulatory and immune systems. Next, the definition of lymphedema, its classification into stages, early and late clinical signs and predisposing factors. This is followed by a discussion of its evaluation and possible treatments for lymphedema secondary to cancer.

Too many healthcare professionals still believe that complex or combined decongestive therapy (CDT), including the famous manual lymph drainage, is the therapy of choice for lymphedema secondary to cancer. However, this technique has been scientifically demonstrated to be ineffective, and is therefore unnecessary for the management of lymphedema. Too few healthcare professionals have the knowledge required to assess and detect lymphedema secondary to cancer at an early stage, so that treatment can be started promptly without the need for complex multilayer bandage therapy.

The ultimate aim of this course is to enable more users with incipient lymphedema to be properly assessed and advised on the early treatment of their lymphedema, so as to avoid its progression and the significant sequelae that can ensue.

Prise en charge du lymphoedème oncologique: de la détection au traitement sans TDC

Beaucoup d’informations très pertinentes, données par une professionnelle passionnée. Permet d’ajouter des outils à mon coffre 🙂

excellente formation
★★★★★

The trainer has a very good grasp of the subject. The training is very well structured. It is practical and offers several tools that can be put into practice in our environments, even if they are not specialized centers…

★★★★★

I also have lymphedema in my left arm following axillary dissection, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy with Taxol. I also have a prosthesis and had an expander for a year. As a nurse, I would like training to include working with a sleeve and gauntlet, as I cannot wear my gauntlet while working due to reduced dexterity and the risk of contamination. Even with gloves over it, it is impossible for me to wash my hands properly with a gauntlet, and I cannot wear just a sleeve because my hand swells up quickly. Only my hand is swollen. Thank you.

★★★★★

Comprehensive course, easy to integrate into practice. Beautiful concrete tools are suggested.

★★★★★

Very well explained, but seems difficult to put into practice without good contacts with suppliers and orthotists…

★★★★★

The trainer presented the course content very clearly. I really enjoyed it, and it wasn’t too heavy despite the amount of content presented during the day!

I learned a lot during the course, but I have to say that I still feel +/- well equipped to apply the best practices for managing lymphedema. I appreciate that the trainer remains available for further questions if needed.

All in all, it was a great course.

★★★★★

Superb presentation. Very comprehensive to know the basics of lymphedema and its treatment. I feel well prepared in the clinic to accompany people and direct them to the right resources according to their needs. Mélissa verbalizes very well and masters the subject wonderfully. It was very interesting and, above all, very relevant. Thank you very much.

Each health professional who is a member of a college or association must complete continuing education units (CEU) annually. Here is some information about kinesiologists, physiotherapists and physiotherapy technologists.

Kinesiologist, FKQ

All accredited members of the Fédération des Kinésiologues du Québec (FKQ) must accumulate 30 credits of recognized continuing education every two years from the year of their accreditation. These credits can be obtained from continuing education offered by the FKQ and/or other organizations recognized by the FKQ. In order to facilitate your task of analyzing the credits granted to your course, the FKQ Continuing Education Committee gives you access to an equivalency grid.

For each* of your courses at Bia education, you will receive a certificate of participation confirming the number of hours of course received.

*Excluding course not accessible to kinesiologists, this exclusion will be mentioned in the course description.

Kinesiologist-kinesitherapist, A.K.K.O.M.Q.

All members of the A.K.K.O.M.Q. must accumulate continuing education units. The association intends to ensure the safety and quality of kinesiology and kinesiology-kinesitherapy interventions, by requiring its members to maintain and improve their knowledge through the many continuing education courses offered annually, and to put their skills into practice while respecting the code of ethics. Credits can be obtained from continuing education offered by the FKQ and/or other organizations recognized by the FKQ.

For each* of your courses at Bia education, you will receive a certificate of participation confirming the number of hours of course received.

*Excluding course not accessible to kinesitherapists, this exclusion will be mentioned in the course description.

Physiotherapist and physiotherapy technologist, OPPQ

In the case of physiotherapists, each member must have a minimum of 45 hours of continuing education units (CEU) during the reference period, which is three years. Of these 45 hours, at least 30 hours must be accumulated in formal learning activities. The remaining continuing education hours can be accumulated in autonomous, formal learning activities or in a combination of both categories.

A CEU is equivalent to one hour of course, which is the actual time spent by the member to acquire or update his or her knowledge or skills. In the context of a formal activity, the member is in a learning situation when acting as a participant. Time spent on breaks, meals or any other activity without academic content should therefore be subtracted from the calculation of CEUs.

A formal learning activity is defined as an activity designed and delivered by experts in the subject matter and with a predetermined structure, content, objectives and duration. All the course offered by Bia education are therefore likely to be considered as a formal learning activity. During your course at Bia education, you will receive a certificate attesting to the number of hours of continuous education granted to the event.

Then, it is the physiotherapist’s role to define whether the suggested training theme is related to his or her practice and will allow him or her to optimize his or her professional competence.
